Holding the canter and building muscle in the hindquarters

How can I get my horse to hold the canter and build muscle in the hindquarters?
Answers from HayHay's experts

Hello! Good question 😃

Building muscle in the hindquarters and improving the canter can take time, but there are several exercises you can try. A good starting point is to canter a few single strides, then break and reward on a long rein before the horse breaks of its own accord. Repeat this over several rides, and the horse will gradually manage more and more.

Transitions are also effective for building muscle. Vary between walk, trot and canter to keep the horse engaged and work different muscle groups.

Work outside the school, such as hacking through woods and countryside or hill work, also helps to build strength. Cantering without a rider on board, for example through long reining or lungeing, is useful too.

Remember to listen to your horse and give it time to rest and recover between sessions. If you suspect something is not right, for example if the horse often breaks from canter, it is worth consulting a saddle fitter or a vet.

Good luck, and do get in touch if you need any more help!
