Getting the hind legs working in tölt

Any tips for getting the hind legs working in tölt? My Icelandic finds tölt a bit tricky, she easily goes four-beat and gets the odd trotting step now and then. What can I do to bring the hindquarters in more and train away the four-beat?
Answers from HayHay's experts

Tölt is a four-beat gait, just like walk. 😊 People often talk, for whatever reason, about focusing heavily on the hindquarters. Active hind legs that step correctly under the horse are of course a good thing, but focusing on collection is rarely what matters most with rhythm faults. Collection comes last on the training scale, and that is because everything else needs to be in place first. Rideability, the horse being relaxed and understanding its job, matters far more than collection. So by focusing on that and getting it right first, the rest usually sorts itself out. Good luck!
