How do you flex the horse correctly, and how do you know when it is right? β€οΈπ
Hello! Flexion happens between the head and the first neck vertebra. The horse can rotate between the first and second vertebra, and further down towards the ribcage it can bend the neck. Flexing to a rein aid is something we have to teach the horse. Standing beside the horse, you can see the jaw on the side you are flexing towards turn in, and the other side turn out. The horse can only flex around 20 degrees, so very little. It is also worth checking that the ears stay level, so the horse does not start to rotate its head between the first and second vertebra. Flexing in movement takes a great deal of feel from the rider, and a horse that understands the aid, so be patient as both of you learn. π
