Getting a long, nice tail

Your best tips for getting the tail to grow? My horse has started scratching her tail off now in the summer, probably because she's coming into season and because of all the insects? But how do I get her to stop scratching, and how do I keep the tail in good condition? I use coat shine spray from TIB pretty much every day. But should I brush the tail every day, and should I use a tail brush, or does an ordinary human hairbrush pull less? Maybe you can oil the tail to make it grow faster? You can oil your own scalp with rosemary oil, for instance, so maybe that works on the horse's dock? What can I add to the feed ration?

Hi!

🥕 Start by thinking about whether anything has changed that might be the reason the horse is scratching her tail. As you mention above, it could be insect bites, but also parasites such as internal parasites (worms), or lice. Perhaps she is reacting to the coat shine spray you are using?

🥕 Do try the PROB products from Ekholms (a Swedish brand, so UK readers may need to find a similar anti-itch shampoo and oil). There is both a shampoo and an oil for itching and sweet itch, available from various retailers. Read the instructions carefully, and wear plastic gloves yourself.

🥕 Do not brush too often, it pulls the hair out. Use a gentle brush and remember to always brush from the bottom up, working tangles out from the ends and up towards the dock.

Good luck! 🦄
