Fun groundwork exercises for bonding?

The horse I ride is fairly young (5 years) and he has no shoes on at the moment, so I can't ride him. But my question is, are there any fun exercises I can do from the ground to bond with him a bit?
Answers from HayHay's experts

Hello! Leading exercises that focus on getting the horse to follow your body language work very well. Position yourself at the horse's shoulder, and let your body language show that you are walking on. Reinforce this if you need to, but the horse should start to move off ahead of you. To halt, use your body language by leaning gently backwards as you walk alongside, reinforcing if necessary, so the horse slows and stops ahead of you. Teaching the horse to rein back in the same way builds responsiveness and keeps its attention on you. 🙂
