Groundwork exercises for a 3-year-old Ardennes

Hi! I have a 3-year-old Ardennes who seems to love working both her brain and her body, but since she isn't backed or driven yet my ideas run out a bit. We've started going over poles, halting with the pole between front and hind legs, going for walks and practising the yo-yo game between backing sessions. Have you got any fun games/exercises I can do with my horse so she can keep herself busy in a bit more variety within one and the same session? Going over 2 poles is fun for about 4 goes, so we can't do that for an hour, and the yo-yo game gets a bit much over an hour 😅 Grateful for fun and useful tips 😃

Hi! One idea is to lay out lots of poles at varying distances and walk over them. That is good for body control and balance.

Here is another exercise, working short sequences into your groundwork. Build stability and balance by walking a few steps forward (about 1 to 3 steps) and then reining back a few steps (about 1 to 3 steps). Stand in front of her, for example, and try to get her to walk slowly forward, using your own posture and trying to avoid pulling on the rein or lead rope. Watch how her forehand moves. The point is to teach her to lift her forehand and move her body slowly and in a coordinated way, back and forth.

Another fun exercise is to set out 4 to 6 cones on a 15 to 20 m circle and let her weave slalom-style around the cones along the line of the circle. 😊
