How do I train my horse to hack out alone in winter?

My 18-year-old gelding is terrified of being hacked out alone in winter. I've tried everything but nothing seems to work. I need all the tips I can get!

You say in winter, does it go well in summer? Is it at any time of day, or is it in the dark that he does not want to go out on his own?

Hacking out alone is a tricky question, because the instinct not to leave safety and the herd is deeply rooted in the horse. Add to that heading out into the dark in winter, and it is no wonder the horse is reluctant!

With horses that do not want to be hacked out alone, I find it helpful to start by hacking out in company and practising changing positions, taking turns to go in front, and working at different distances between the horses. Build the gap up gradually, and keep the horse occupied in various ways to help it focus on a task, for example weaving in and out of some trees or working on flexion and bend.

You can often make real progress with training, but horses are individuals too. Some love being out on their own exploring and are happy to lead the way when you ride with others, while some never take to it.

Working on your general relationship with the horse is never wrong. Spend time with it and do groundwork. The more security and trust the horse feels with you, the more likely it is to feel safer hacking out alone with you 🥰 Good luck!
