Horse that does not want to go onto the outside track

The horse I share will go on the outside track in walk and trot, but after we've cantered a bit and are about to canter more, she doesn't want to go out onto the track. She has done it before, but now it's really hard to get her back out onto the track again.

Hello! The way I see it, going on the track is not an obvious thing to do from a horse's point of view. It is almost illogical, because you are turning the whole time, so the horse might as well turn sooner. 😉 So to help your horse understand, you can practise turning before the corners. Turn anywhere from the middle of the school to just a metre before you reach the corner. The point is that you decide when the horse turns. That way you also decide when the horse turns and follows the track.

In canter, the corners tend to come where the horse thinks turning feels comfortable, and it is usually harder for us to ride right out into them. So try thinking the same way in canter: you turn the horse where you decide, and you do not need to stay on the track the whole time at all. This makes the horse more attentive to you, and it becomes easier for you to decide where you both turn, for example asking the horse to follow the track.
