Horse that does not listen on hacks after a canter

My share pony doesn't listen after I've cantered out in the open. She won't listen to my pace or do any halts, she pulls her head up and wants to keep running. I try to use my voice a lot and keep a soft hand, but nothing works. It means I can never enjoy myself after a canter, I just have to keep my reins short and really try to calm her down.

Hi!

Your share pony sounds like a lively lady 😍

🐴 It sounds as though she is very forward and the two of you have not quite built up good communication yet. Do you ride with a coach on her?

🐴 If you can, it would be brilliant to ask a coach you get on well with and trust to help you with the basics, in other words practising changes of tempo and transitions between the gaits. Accelerate, slow down and steer, quite simply. Adding a few poles and cones to the work helps, so that you do not get stuck on the track or on a circle.

🐴 Only once the basics are really solid in the school would I recommend cantering out on a hack. Until then, ride in the woods instead, over rough ground, but only in walk and trot. It is just as good for the horse as cantering, and the two of you will become more in tune if you are not sitting there braking all the way home.

I hope this has helped 🦄
