How do I get my horse to trust me near her muzzle?

My horse has a past where her whiskers were trimmed off her muzzle. Because of this she won't let me touch on or near her muzzle. Any tips on how she can trust me more?

Hello!

How awful that she has been put through having her whiskers removed from her muzzle. Under the Swedish Equestrian Federation's competition rules it is no longer permitted to remove them (whisker-trimming is also banned in UK affiliated competition).

I understand that she is protective of her muzzle. Let it take time. Try working with a soft (super-soft) brush, or a soft cloth, stroking it over her head and down towards the muzzle. Stop before she lifts her head away, and reward her with a pat, kind words and perhaps a treat if she will take one. In time she will most likely accept you coming closer and closer to the muzzle.

Let her feel that you are not focusing on the muzzle itself. Take the drama out of it by simply pottering about near her head and face.

Good luck! 🐴
