Leg-yield for a young horse - step by step
Hello! When teaching leg-yield, it is important to break it down into small parts, working out what the horse needs to understand before it can leg-yield. A good start is to begin from the ground, teaching the horse to move different parts of its body one step at a time off a light aid, for example from a dressage whip. The horse learns to move the hindquarters and the forehand separately off simple aids. It also matters that the restraining and forward-driving aids are working well. Once the horse understands these parts separately from a standstill, I usually begin by moving them along the wall or fence from the ground, and then do the same thing mounted. The fence acts as a frame and makes it easier for the horse to understand and get it right.
Good luck!
