Managing a sensitive cold-blood trotter over fences
It is completely understandable that things can feel uncomfortable when the speed gets too high.
I would recommend bringing in some groundwork with your horse for a while, doing the following. Start in a headcollar and lead rope or line. Work first on halt to walk transitions and changes of tempo in the walk. Practise until the horse understands what means forward and what means brake, using your body language and your voice, and praise generously.
Then build up to walk to trot and trot to canter transitions. Simply walking over poles in a relaxed way is good too.
Once the horse feels calm and comfortable in the transitions, you can add tiny cross-poles to pop over.
Note, no auxiliary reins while you do this. This matters because the horse has to work with its own body, and it uses its head and neck to balance. It also becomes clearer when the horse genuinely relaxes, because then the head and neck come into a good position on their own. 😊
