Muscle-building exercises for a B pony

I've bought a 7-year-old B pony who had been in work and trained, but the previous owner then left her standing for about six months. Now that I've bought her I want to start building muscle again, and I need help with good exercises.

Hi!

Walking over poles is a great way to build strength. Trot poles ask for more stability and control, which for many ponies becomes too much or too hard for the body, so the horse does not actually strengthen. Start mainly in walk for that reason.

Here are two pole exercises.

Exercise 1: Ride, or do this from the ground, curves over and between poles laid across the centre line. Vary the size of the curves. On the long sides you can add transitions, changes of tempo and slow walk.

Exercise 2: Curves along the long side over poles. The curves can also be made straighter, and in the far turn you can ride a quarter turn on the forehand or on the haunches.

On the other long side, add transitions, changes of tempo, slow walk and so on.

Focus on yourself, where you sit and staying in balance through the turns. Turn from your outside aids. Look up over the pony's ears. Try riding the turns with both reins in one hand, a good balance exercise for you. When we sit well in the saddle and use our seat to best effect, we make it possible for the horse to work correctly and build muscle. Good luck! 😊
