Nervous in canter after an accident

I feel nervous in canter on one of my share horses. He's around 170cm at the withers and pretty strong in canter when you hack out. He throws his head when you try to slow him down and his canter strides are really uneven, so it's hard to sit softly in the saddle, you sort of bounce. Last autumn I hacked out in the woods with him and it was muddy because it had started to rain. He bolted without warning with me and I was completely on my own and couldn't get him to stop. We very nearly went down when he slipped with both hind legs in the mud. Luckily we were both fine, but I've been a bit scared of cantering ever since. I feel like I easily lose control and get scared/worried when he won't slow down. I'd gladly take any tips I can get.

Hello!

I understand that you feel nervous and find cantering your share horse unpleasant. It is important that you avoid situations that feel unsafe or could become dangerous.

Here are a few tips:

1. Ride with company. The horse may settle in company, and we riders also tend to relax when we are not out on our own.
2. Do not canter out hacking until you feel fully in control. You can exercise a horse in plenty of ways without cantering. Riding through woodland, for example, is good for the horse because it has to pick its feet up and work on its coordination, and it improves balance, fitness and your communication.
3. Work with a trainer to develop your riding and improve the communication between you and the horse. Many different problems can be resolved by polishing the basics. As your riding comes on in the arena or school, you can then carry that confidence and experience out on a hack.

Good luck, and do ask again if you would like more tips or if anything is unclear!
