How do I get my strong-minded horse to go out into the corners of the arena?

My horse is very strong-minded. So I often can't get her out to the edge and I need help. Yesterday she refused completely. I do everything I've been taught but nothing works, so I don't really know what to do.

Hi! When you say "the edge", do you mean the track and the corners? I have two tips for getting the horse to go better on the track and to ride easily into the corners.

1️⃣ Start by letting go of the focus on reaching the track and the corners. Ride a square further in on the arena and concentrate on your turning aids. The idea is that your horse never has to decide to change direction. You always do that through your influence. Now make the sides of the square different lengths, so your horse waits until you ask it to change direction. Once that works, you can ride a little closer to the track with each turn until you are on the track, but still without focusing on getting right into the corners.

2️⃣ Now bring the focus onto riding all the way into the corners. Make the corner something pleasant: this is where you pause, give a scratch or perhaps a treat. Do this as a thing in its own right, with no demand for work between the corners. How you get to the corners at first does not matter. Do this over a few days, halting in each corner from both directions.

Now you can start to put the two together. Once it has clicked, your horse will want to go out into the corners and you can steer on easily with your turning aids.

Good luck! 🙂
