Avoiding snowball build-up in Icelandic horses' hooves
My Icelandics get fairly big snowballs in their feet that have to be knocked out with a hammer. The horses need to be exercised so I'd love some tips on alternatives for snow pads. They're due to be shod soon so it feels pointless to buy snow pads you fit yourself that maybe won't get used🥰 I've tried plastic jar lids but I can only get half of it in, barely even that.

Hi! I have used plastic jar lids myself and I think they work well as a temporary fix. The problem, as you say, is that they are tricky to get in. What I find easiest when fitting the lids is to fold them slightly, so you hold the edges and press to make a bend in the middle. Then you let the edges out once you have the whole lid inside the shoe, so it unfolds and lies flat. I hope that makes sense. 🙈
Applying hoof oil, petroleum jelly or coat gloss should work all right as a temporary fix too. I do not feel the oil has helped that well, but it may be worth a try anyway. 🥰
