Suppling exercise

Do you have any tips for suppling exercises to add variety to training?
Answers from HayHay's experts

Here is an exercise that can be both fun and challenging.

Try riding the circle as a square rather than a round shape. In the corners, lead clearly inwards with the inside rein and follow with the outside rein, as though you were steering with handlebars. Ride straight between the corners and catch the horse up with the outside rein.

Watch carefully for any sign that the horse is falling in or losing the outside shoulder, and correct your seat and aids if needed.

You can do the exercise in any pace, but start in walk and change the rein often. Once the square feels easy, ride more turns in a diamond shape before moving on to the usual circle. This helps to supple the horse and improve its straightness. Good luck and have fun.
