Suppling and strengthening exercises in the forest
Riding very slowly down a gentle slope is excellent for strength, because the horse works the muscles it needs to hold a good posture and balance, which in turn lets it carry a rider well.
Walk slowly down a gentle slope, step by step. Find a stable seat yourself and try not to brake or hold with the reins. Keep your hands in front of you on a light, soft contact. Brake first with your seat, helping with the hand only if you need to, taking the hand slightly forward and up as you give the restraining rein-aid. It should feel as though the horse waits for each step and the forehand lifts, with the withers coming up. It can feel a little wobbly and tricky at first, much harder than you would think. But it is a very effective exercise! 😊
