Tips for teaching a horse to tölt

My horse is being taught to tölt at the moment. I would say she finds it hard though, are there any tips and tricks?

Hello! There is a great deal you can do to help a horse find the tölt. It also depends on things like the horse's genetic aptitude for tölt, where it is in its training, and which gait it chooses when left to its own devices.

One of the basics for being able to ride tölt is a horse that is well schooled on the fundamental aids, that is, the forward-driving and restraining rein-aids, along with an understanding of the bit.

When I am training young horses, my thinking is that by the time tölt comes onto the agenda, they should have a good chance of saying YES when I ask whether we can go forward in tölt. Getting the horse to that point depends, of course, on everything I mentioned at the start.

One myth about tölt is that the horse has to be collected. That is not true. What it does need, as I said above, is to understand the forward-driving and restraining rein-aids, with the forward-driving aid able to activate the hind legs.

Do come back with a bit more detail and I will help you further!
