How do I train away my horse's one-sidedness on the different reins?

My horse is lovely on one rein, light in the hand, easy to adjust and move around. But on the other rein he likes to creep behind the vertical, over-flexes and leans in, putting weight on his inside shoulder. Have you got any tips on how I can work away this one-sidedness?

If a horse feels very one-sided, I always think it is worth starting with a check from the vet, and then perhaps a chiropractor, to get to the bottom of why it is happening. The problem can also lie with us. As riders we are crooked and one-sided ourselves, so do check yourself over too 😁

As for exercises to even him up, a good one is to ride the horse dead straight between four cones. At each cone, turn the horse with the turning aids: outside leg, leading inside rein, and a soft contact on the outside rein. If the horse wants to fall onto its inside shoulder, take your time over the turn, and move the inside shoulder over a little before you start it if you need to. One-sidedness can also come from one side simply being stronger, so hacking out across woods and fields to build strength is another good trick.

Good luck! 💫
