Turn on the haunches technique

Turn on the haunches? I'm having trouble doing a turn on the haunches, I can't get it to work well, so I'd really like some help getting a good turn on the haunches.

A good exercise is to set out cones in a square. At each cone you halt, then move the forehand round step by step.

The aids:

The inside rein creates the flexion and leads the forehand round the inside hind leg, one step at a time.

The outside rein restrains, controlling the neck so it does not over-bend.

Both reins may need to restrain so the horse does not step forward.

The inside leg sits at the girth, stopping the inside hind leg from stepping inwards and, together with the inside rein, regulating the speed of the turn.

The outside leg sits slightly back and stops the hindquarters from falling out.

Both legs drive forward when needed.

Your weight should stay well into the direction of travel.

A common mistake is for the rider to collapse onto the outside in the turn, which makes it difficult or impossible for the horse to do the turn well.

Getting turns on the haunches right takes time, so be patient 💫🌷
