What can you expect from a 3-year-old?

I'm wondering what a 3-year-old should be able to do under saddle?

Hi!

What you can expect from a young horse depends entirely on what you have done with it, that is, the training you have given it. It also depends on how it has grown up, its breeding and whether it has stayed healthy and well up to now.

Everything you do with the horse is part of its education, from leading it to and from the paddock, putting on a headcollar or other tack, to working it from the ground or under saddle.

🐴 It is important to get help from an experienced coach and young-horse producer when you are bringing on your young horse. This makes sure the training is done correctly and gently for the horse, and it also helps you avoid unnecessarily risky situations.

You can read a summary on the SWB (Swedish Warmblood Association) website of how young horses are produced year by year at Flyinge, one of Sweden's national equestrian centres and home to part of the Equine Studies degree run by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU):
