Anxious in the horsebox

Hi! My horse has never had any problem travelling in the box before, but out of nowhere she started throwing herself backwards in the box as soon as you start driving, and stamping in the bends too. She loads herself and can stand in the box for a long time with all the doors shut without any trouble. When you open up to check on her she is completely unbothered.

Hi! I call these horses "wall runners". They often lean to one side and press themselves against the wall and step or run on the spot. Some throw themselves backwards instead. The behaviour usually appears when a horse stands too cramped and has a fixed central partition that runs all the way from the top down to the floor. The horse simply struggles to keep its balance and cannot widen its legs. Horses like this often travel best with no fittings at all, using long travel bars at the front and back, or with the partition moved to one side, though it must then be fixed securely.

It is also worth riding in the trailer yourself to feel whether it really is comfortable back there. How you drive matters enormously. A camera in the box helps too, so you can keep an eye on the horse.

A third option is to borrow a larger, roomier trailer with a partition and a rubber mat along the bottom, and see how she travels in that. A stable, well-built horsebox makes a real difference.

Good luck!
