Can't get the horse in from the paddock - what do I do?
Hello!
I understand how frustrating it is that your horse runs off from you in the paddock. It is fairly common for horses to go a little feral when they are out at grass, which makes them harder to catch and a bit trickier to handle than usual.
Training a reliable recall takes a little time. I would also suggest fetching him along with one of the other horses from the paddock. It is always easier to bring in more than one horse from a herd.
Is the grazing close to the yard? Could you set up a routine of bringing the horses in, giving them something nice to eat and letting them rest and relax in the stable? If you can bring them in for a while every day, it becomes a habit and hopefully easier by the day.
It also matters that you are aware of how you use your body language and your position in relation to the horse when you go to catch it. Approach at an angle from the front rather than chasing it from behind, which only drives it away from you.
Another trick is to bring some carrots or other treats and give them to the other horses. Your horse will almost certainly take an interest, and you can then hopefully catch it.
Good luck! Do ask again if anything was unclear!
