Catching the horse in the paddock

When I go to fetch my horse in the paddock he just runs off from me and refuses to be caught. How can I get him to come in so I can ride?
Answers from HayHay's experts

It is not unusual for horses at grass to become a little harder to catch, but here are a few tips that can help.

Practise recall using rewards such as treats, to make it more appealing for the horse to come to you. It can take time, but it is worth it.

Try fetching your horse together with another horse from the herd, as that can make it easier. Build a routine where the horses come in from the paddock for a while each day to rest and have something nice to eat. That makes them easier to catch over time.

Be aware of your body language. Approach the horse at an angle from the front, not from behind, so that you do not drive it away.

Take carrots or something tasty and give them to the other horses in the paddock. That can tempt your horse to come closer.

Good luck!
