Competing an Icelandic horse for the first time

I'm about to ride my first unofficial competition soon, in V5 and T8. I've never competed before and I don't really know how it works. How do I know when I'm due to go out and compete, and at what time? How long before should I get to the competition so I have time to warm up? How do I know when I'm riding each class? It says you should request a direction, does that mean I get to ride in whichever direction I want in, for example, V5?
Answers from HayHay's experts

Great that you are going out to compete! ๐Ÿ˜

  • You choose your direction on the entry form
  • The classes you ride run on the announcer's command. The announcer will call you and your horse up to the collecting ring and tell you when to ride into the arena
  • Warming up and timings are different for everyone. Personally I like to be there in good time before the competition, around two hours before my start
  • Information on the rules is here (the Swedish Icelandic Horse Association, a Swedish-language resource): https://www.icelandichorse.se/tavling/tavlingsregler

If you have any questions about tack, ask the judges at the riders' meeting in the morning. The organisers will usually help answer questions too ๐Ÿ’ซ

Very best of luck!
