Covering an older mare

Tips and advice before covering an SWB mare. I'm planning to cover my 16-year-old SWB mare (Swedish Warmblood). She had her first foal at 8 and another the year after, but that foal died after a day. I'm now wondering whether it's safe to breed from her again? I'm also considering covering her with a different breed. How does crossbreeding work, and what size of stallion is best for a mare that is 162 cm tall?

How exciting that you are thinking about breeding. If the cause of the earlier foal's death was not hereditary, the risk of problems this time is probably no higher. Your mare is older now, though, so a vet check is wise to confirm that her uterus and ovaries look healthy. A check at an AI or covering station can be a good option. The SWB website has more general advice under "Råd inför betäckning" (Advice before covering).

When it comes to choosing a stallion, it does not matter that your mare is SWB. You can choose any breed you like, and the foal can still be registered with the Swedish Horse Breeding Association (Svenska Hästavelsförbundet) if it is a cross. The right stallion size depends on the size of foal you want. For a smaller foal, choose a smaller stallion, and the other way round. Bear in mind that a very small stallion will probably give an offspring smaller than the mare, but not as small as the stallion.
