Driving a barefoot horse

I'm wondering whether you can drive a barefoot horse, or whether you have to use hoof boots or something similar?
Answers from HayHay's experts

Hello!

It depends entirely on the quality of the horse's hooves, and on the surface and the speed or gait you plan to drive at. It is fairly easy to feel whether a horse is footsore when you are riding, but a little harder when you are sitting behind in a carriage. Watch how the pony moves, whether it stumbles or seems footsore in any other way. Keep an eye on how the hooves wear, and it should go perfectly well 👍

Do have a word with your farrier, who can surely give good advice on what the pony can cope with.

Good luck, and drive carefully! 🦄
