Trouble being on my own at the yard

A girl at the yard doesn't think I should be on my own at the yard, or mainly that I shouldn't hack out on my own as my horse is traffic-shy. But because she thinks I shouldn't be on my own at the yard, my mum doesn't think so either, because she's scared it'll create a bad atmosphere at the yard. What should I do to be allowed to be on my own at the yard?

Hi!

I understand this is a tricky situation for you 🥰🐴

It feels a bit like your question splits into two parts.

🐴 First, the girl at the yard has a point that hacking out alone is not a good idea if your horse is traffic-shy. That is something to take seriously, and you need to work with your horse to get it used to traffic. The best way is to ride out in safe company, and to take regular lessons with a trainer so that your relationship with the horse grows stronger. As your knowledge and riding skill improve, the situations where the horse spooks at traffic will also become easier to handle. You and your horse need the tools to get through things the horse finds frightening. You will also get better at reading your horse, and at anticipating and heading off trouble before it arises.

🐴 Second, your mum may need to understand how the girl at the yard is thinking. It would help to talk to her together and agree a plan for how and when you spend time at the yard. Without knowing more than what you have written, I suspect the other girl means well and worries that something might happen when you ride alone. It sounds sensible not to hack out on your own, but pottering about and getting on with jobs at the yard on your own may well be no problem at all.

Good luck! 🦄
