How do I treat sweet itch?

My full-size horse has now started to get eczema and is beginning to partly itch off his mane. I want to stop him rubbing off all his mane and tail this summer, is there any product I can use? 😊

Hello! If it is sweet itch, then in my view a sweet itch rug like the ones Boett makes is the best option, the slightly thicker, sturdier fabric. On one of mine I have also started using the same model in a zebra-striped version, which seems to deter insects even more. There is research showing that zebra stripes, or small checks, put insects off.

Wash the affected areas with Hibiscrub. Apply an emollient ointment or baby oil so the skin does not dry out and become even more irritated. And make sure the horse can come in during the worst times of day for insects.
