I feel done with my loan horse - what do I do now?

Hi! I've been riding my loan pony for almost a year now. We've trained and competed all year and it's gone really well. He's older but still bright and happy. We train up to 100 cm and that works fine. He can't start higher than LD/LC (D pony) though, because he's quite old. I feel like I'm starting to outgrow him and that we won't get any further. But I don't know what to do. I'd love to move up to a full-size horse completely, but I can't afford to buy an expensive horse. I do want to be able to jump, and I don't know anyone who needs help with a full-size horse either. What should I do?

Hi! How lovely that things are going so well with your loan pony 👍🐴

I understand it can be tricky to know how to move forward. Here is how I look at it:

🥕 Do you have the pony on full loan? If not, this might be the moment, because you know him well and everything is working nicely, so it is a good opportunity to practise on your own horse.

🥕 It is also worth thinking about whether it might still be worth keeping this pony for another year. It is usually tempting to want to aim higher as soon as things go well at a given level. There is real value in taking the time to make your own knowledge and skills even better alongside a horse you work well with. Finding a horse or pony that suits you is hard, and there are always plenty of details to polish and elements to improve on, even if you are not jumping any higher. A year goes quickly, but you can learn a huge amount if you keep the pony you know well and enjoy. Then, over the year, you can look out for someone who might have a younger or larger horse that could suit you.

😻🐴 Take your time and enjoy how well suited you are to each other!

🥕 Other ways to move forward and learn more are to try riding with one or more new coaches, and to try disciplines other than the one you are most used to. Perhaps it is time to train jumping, dressage and working equitation, for example, to sharpen your riding skills and feel further.

Everything we do with horses trains them, and us at the same time 😊🦄

Good luck!
