Why salt without iodine?

Why should you give salt without iodine? Is it important, or does it not matter if you give it in a small amount?
Answers from HayHay's experts

Hello! It depends on the total amount of salt you give. Horses have a maximum tolerance of 10 mg iodine per 100 kg bodyweight (lower for mares in foal). So if you have a horse that trains and sweats heavily, a trotter or an endurance horse for example, it needs a lot of salt (NaCl) to replace what is lost through sweat. Salt without added iodine is then the better choice. A horse's iodine requirement is 0.35 mg per 100 kg bodyweight.
