Signs of laminitis
My overweight Icelandic horse has got lines on his hooves, could that be a sign of laminitis?
Answers from HayHay's experts
The lines on the hooves may well be feed rings, a natural response to changes in feed, grazing or environment. These rings are common and not necessarily a sign of laminitis.
With acute laminitis the horse develops severe pain and inflammation in the hooves, which can produce a laminitic ring that only shows 4 to 5 weeks after an episode. If your horse has been its usual self over the summer, with normal energy and behaviour, there is probably nothing to worry about. Ask your farrier to assess the hooves, and consult a vet if you are unsure or would like help with weight reduction.
Good luck with the training!
