Riding school - how did you move on from it?

I go to a riding school and of course it's fun, but I'm just not getting what I want out of the horses. I don't actually find the riding itself the fun bit, I just want to be around the horses without any pressure, maybe go for walks or just have a cuddle with them. But riding school is sort of the only "way in", so you kind of have to go there to be around horses. At the riding school though it ends up being more that you turn up, take your horse, ride, and then hand it over to the next person. I mean sure, jumping and stuff is fun, but hacking out in the woods is so much more fun. I don't think riding school is right for me, but at the same time I don't want to quit, because then I might not get to be around horses as much, and there's a long waiting list to get a place again if I changed my mind. There's also just so many people at a riding school and you can't really know who everyone is. Has anyone felt the same, and how did you handle it?

I know exactly what you mean. When I rode at a riding school I felt the same way in my last year. I also found that things other than the riding itself were the most fun. A brilliant solution is to get a share horse. For many people, a share horse becomes like having your own horse, just for one or a few days a week.

You get more freedom to do what you want (in agreement with the owner, of course), and you can develop in the things you are passionate about. Plenty of people are looking for a sharer who wants exactly that, to hack out, potter about with the horse or do groundwork. A share horse also gives you the chance to build the relationship and communication with the horse in a way you cannot with a riding-school horse, because you get everything around it too, not just the riding.

A good way to find a share horse is to write an advert with information about you, your experience and what you are looking for. Post it on Facebook, where there are loads of groups for finding horse shares.

I hope you find one that suits you! ❤️
