Oil in the feed

I've heard oil is good for horses?! Can I give my horse oil in its feed? How often and how much?
Answers from HayHay's experts

Hello!

Why do you want to give your horse a supplement in the form of oil?

🥕 Oil, or other fat-rich feeds, can be a good addition to a ration where the forage does not supply enough energy on its own. This mainly applies if the horse is lean or has a very high energy requirement.

🥕 It is important to introduce oil gradually, though. Start with a small amount and build it up slowly.

🥕 You cannot give unlimited oil. The current recommendation is a maximum of 75 g of oil per 100 kg of bodyweight per day (for a 500 kg horse that works out at around 400 ml of oil).

The Häst Sverige website (a Swedish equine information site; the principles apply equally in the UK) has more on when you need to add hard feed to a horse's ration:

I hope that answers your question. If not, give me a shout! 🦄😊
