Stallion choice for two mares

I have two mares that may be covered next spring, and I'm looking for stallion suggestions. I want pleasant individuals that suit an amateur rider but can also perform at 1.30m in jumping. The mares are by Diero Lux N - Baltimore and Coronas (sire: Cornet Obolensky) - Akribori. Both are big and a bit on the heavier side, so I'm after a stallion that can lighten them up a little. Have you got any suggestions based on the bloodlines?

How exciting, new coverings to plan. When you choose a stallion, the key is to set a clear goal for the foal. Since you want pleasant individuals with scope for 1.30m jumping, and you want to lighten the mare's conformation, start by looking at stallions with more elegance and suppleness, while making sure they have good breeding values for temperament and jumping.

Here are a few tips for choosing a stallion:

Look at the descriptive breeding values. On blup.se (the Swedish Warmblood database of breeding values) you can find descriptive breeding values for stallions, which tell you how their offspring are expected to turn out, based on previous progeny and the stallion's own qualities. This can help you find a stallion that matches your goals and lightens your mares' conformation. UK breeders will find equivalent estimated breeding values and stallion data through their own studbook or breed society.

Consult a breeding adviser. If you want more specific help matching stallion and mare, an independent breeding adviser is worth approaching. The Swedish Warmblood Association (SWB) offers this service, and there are private advisers too who can help you find the best stallion for your mares and breeding goals.

It is also worth reading more about breeding values on the SWB website.

Good luck with your breeding.
