My stallion lunges at me and rears when I lunge him

My horse lunges at me or rears when he feels I'm asking too much, for example on the lunge. I haven't had him that long but I've known him since 2021. The lunging can come a bit randomly, like if I wave the whip a little in the air he can suddenly spin round with his ears back and snap at me while charging in at full speed. If I crack the whip on the ground instead, he stops and rears. He isn't scared of the whip at all so I don't think that's where the problem lies. Maybe worth mentioning that he's a stallion?

Hi, it is great that you are asking for help and advice. It sounds as though your horse does not understand what he is meant to do. Lungeing is not easy until you have all the signals in place.

Do not carry on as you are, with him striking out at you. That can quickly turn into a dangerous situation.

Here are a few follow-up questions:

πŸ€ Have you trained horses before and taught them to be lunged? There are a few tricks and good methods, including how you position yourself and how you use your commands and body language to drive the horse on and to settle him.

πŸ€ Does it go well when you lunge a horse other than your own?

πŸ€ Have you trained stallions before? It is different from working with a gelding or a mare, and it calls for knowledge and a great deal of respect for a stallion's reactions.

πŸ€ Do you have a trainer you trust and feel safe with? I think it would be brilliant for you and your horse to get help from someone with plenty of experience of stallions. It is much more fun when you have support. 😊
