Is it true that oats make horses more lively?

You often hear that oats make horses more lively, but is there actually any correlation between the two? Or is it just the extra energy in the ration that causes this effect?
Answers from HayHay's experts

The scientific support for oats making horses more lively is thin. What evidence there is shows that young horses learned a little more slowly on oats than on forage alone. Horses seem to handle different energy sources differently when it comes to liveliness, and training probably matters at least as much.
