Which feeds and supplements can help my horse with gastric ulcer symptoms?

Hi! I've got a horse with gastric ulcer symptoms, a 7-year-old gelding who is very stressed. He's had poor droppings, especially in winter, and it's now got a lot worse. Products we've tried before have worked but don't work any more. He's showing lots of ulcer symptoms like stress, poor droppings and worried eyes, especially when you're around his stomach. A gastroscopy is booked, but until then I'm wondering if you've got any tips on feeds or supplements you can give preventatively to a horse showing signs of stomach trouble.
Answers from HayHay's experts

Hi! It is great that you are having him scoped to find out whether he has ulcers or whether something else is troubling him. For horses with stomach problems, it is important that they have access to forage for a large part of the day, so the gut always has something to work on. Because horses produce stomach acid constantly, the gastric juices become very strong and corrosive if too long passes between feeds. Adding lucerne to the ration can also help your horse.
