Salt or a salt lick

Does a horse need to be given salt, or is a salt lick enough?
Answers from HayHay's experts

A salt lick in the stable is usually not enough to make sure a horse gets enough salt. It is better to add loose, fine, non-iodised salt to the feed.

On hot days, or after a training session when the horse can lose large amounts of salt through sweating, you can also add salt to its water bucket if it likes it. The daily maintenance requirement for a 500 kg horse is 25 grams.
