Healing a shallow wound

My horse has got a shallow wound on its belly and seems to find it painful when you touch it. How do I get it to heal?
Answers from HayHay's experts

Sorry to hear your horse has picked up a wound. How long it takes to heal depends on several things: the size and depth of the wound, where it is, and whether it becomes infected. A few tips to help it along:

Keep it clean. Bathe the area gently with saline solution or a mild wound wash to ward off infection.

Watch for signs of infection. If the area swells, feels hot, or starts to weep heavily and smell, that can point to infection. Call your vet if it does.

Protect the wound. Where you can, keep it clean and dry so it is not irritated further.

It is always fine to call your vet if you are unsure or the wound seems to be getting worse. If it is large, deep, or sits near a joint, get veterinary help as soon as possible.

Good luck, I hope it heals quickly!
