Tips if your horse has a hoof abscess

What should you do if your horse has a hoof abscess?
Answers from HayHay's experts

Hi!

It is no fun when your horse has a hoof abscess.

🥕Has a farrier diagnosed it for you?

🥕If you suspect a hoof abscess, contact a farrier and/or a vet. You will often notice it when the horse goes suddenly very lame, the hoof feels warm and you can feel a raised pulse down at the fetlock.

🥕Although the horse becomes very lame, a hoof abscess is still a good diagnosis with a good prognosis, and horses usually recover fairly quickly.

🥕 Your farrier and vet can advise you on exactly what to do to get your horse sound again.

🥕The abscess needs to "mature", and the farrier then often has to cut into the hoof at the abscess to release the pus that is causing pressure and pain inside the hoof.

🥕Keep the area clean and free of dirt and bacteria, dress the hoof, and sometimes a cast is needed.

I hope you get good help, and good luck!🦄
