My horse hesitates at the fences when we jump at a competition

When I took part in a "competition" at the yard where I ride, I rode the horse I always ride. Jumping in lessons usually goes fine, but when we jump at a "competition" she sometimes hesitates. What could this be down to? Is it something I'm doing wrong? (The competitions are held in the indoor school I ride in during lessons and on my own, so it's nothing new or different)

It is lovely that you are thinking about what might be affecting her hesitation. It is true that the competition environment can be a little different, with music, a commentator, more horses and so on. Most of the time, though, it is us that the horses pick up on, the tension that builds inside us. Have you felt nervous, tense or anxious before or during a competition? 😊 If not, it is still worth reflecting on how you feel yourself. If you are nervous, focus on your breathing and take deep breaths. Good luck!
