How do you clean a bridle in the best way?

Hi! What is the best way to clean a bridle? Saddle soap first and then leather balm? Or is the saddle soap enough on its own? I'm also wondering if you have any tips for really getting the dirt off a bridle, I find it can stay put even after I've used saddle soap🤗

Hi!

How best to clean a bridle is partly a matter of personal taste. I have added three links below to products I like to use myself.

With my own bridles, I tend to think along these lines:

1) Daily cleaning after use:

For this I like to use one of the two saddle soap products I have linked below. I do not take the bridle apart every day, but I do run a small sponge dampened with lukewarm water and a little saddle soap over it. Work up a lather, then wipe the lather and dirt away with a dry towel or cloth. Blow out the holes and fill them back in with lather. This keeps the leather free of sweat and dirt, and at the same time lets you spot any part that looks worn or damaged and needs replacing.

2) Conditioning: A little less often, I take the bridle apart, repeat step one above, and then work in a tiny amount of leather grease. There are many different brands and types, but Effax is one example. I usually put a little on a towel and rub it out and work it into the leather.

If you find the dirt is staying put, wash it several times with water and soap and scrub with the coarser, scrubbing side of a sponge. Clean it often and the dirt will not take hold as easily.

Good luck👏🏼🦄
