How long does the grass keep growing in the field?

Roughly how long does the grass keep growing in the field? And when is it time to start supplementary feeding?
Answers from HayHay's experts

Hello!

It keeps growing roughly until the temperature drops to 7–8°C, and a night frost will halt growth too. Even while the grass is still growing, its nutritional value falls as the season goes on. The proportion of fibre rises while the proportion of digestible nutrients drops.

It can be hard to know when to start supplementary feeding. It depends, of course, on what your paddock is like and how much grass is left. For horses in moderate work, it is usually enough to keep an eye on their body condition. Once they begin to drop off, it is time to add extra feed.

I hope that helps! 🦄
