What should you do when the horse is lame with a swollen, hot joint?

My horse is lame and she's swollen and hot in the joint. I'm wondering if there's anything especially good to do when it's like this? Is there any exercise that can help?

Hello!

When a horse is hot and swollen at a joint and lame on top of that, you should always contact a vet to examine the horse as quickly as possible. It could point to a tendon injury, for example. While you wait for the vet to arrive, you can cool the leg with cold water for 10 to 15 minutes and put the horse on box rest. If it is swollen with a hot hoof and upwards, and very lame, it could be a hoof abscess. Either way, a vet should examine the horse. Good luck!
