Equipment for long reining - what do I need?
Hi!
Great that you want to try long reining, a really versatile and useful form of training for most horses.
Anders Eriksson, a real long-reining guru, has several instructional videos on his website showing how to go about it. 👍 (His material is in Swedish, but the technique carries over.) Here is a quick summary of what you need:
☘️ Long-reining roller: It is often worth spending a little more than the very cheapest roller, but it does not have to cost a fortune. Buying second-hand works well too, since these rollers rarely wear much.
☘️ Long reins: Choose reins that are not too wide, as they become heavy and can make it hard to close your hand.
☘️ Bridle: Use one that fits the horse. A cavesson is great if you are both used to working with it.
☘️ A trainer: Do not hesitate to bring in a trainer who is good at teaching long reining. It is far easier to learn with someone standing beside you who can offer tips and show you how. There is a little more to keep track of than with lungeing, but it is also so much more rewarding👍
Good luck!🦄
