Horses build muscle the same way people do, through work. But they also need the building blocks, protein, to do it. One feedstuff that is high in protein is lucerne. How much to feed depends on what else the horse is getting. You can work out a complete feed ration once you have had your forage analysed, so you know what the forage itself provides.
