Horse that puts its tongue behind the bit when jumping

My horse puts his tongue behind the bit when we're jumping, never over it but always behind. I've tried a tongue grid and tying the tongue, nothing works. It's starting to become a problem now at competitions as he's meant to move up the classes, but the rideability isn't there when he gets his tongue behind. Please help with some tips!

Hi!

I understand you are having problems. A horse putting its tongue behind the bit is a sign that something is wrong. It could be discomfort from the tack, for example, but it could also be something that is not quite right in the mouth. I would start with a dental check, making sure to book a vet who specialises in dentistry and is confident giving advice on tack and bits.

There is a difference between an annual dental check and an oral examination that sets out to find and solve a problem. When you book the visit, explain clearly what you need help with. Depending on where in the country you live, you may need to contact a few different vets or clinics before you find one who specialises in this.

Good luck, and do ask again if you have any follow-up questions 😊🐴
