Vaccination for competing
Hi! To compete with your horse, it must be vaccinated against equine influenza. This is compulsory for competition horses, and it is also recommended for other horses to reduce the risk of spread. You should also be aware that before each competition you "sign" an owner's declaration, which among other things requires that your horse has shown no signs of illness for at least three weeks before the start.
To keep your horse protected against equine influenza and able to compete, you should vaccinate it at least once a year, because no more than 365 days may pass between vaccinations. If longer than that goes by, you have to redo the primary course, which is three injections: A, B and C. After the first vaccination (A), the second (B) must follow within 21 to 56 days. The third (C) must then follow within 90 to 180 days after the B vaccination. After the C vaccination the horse has an eight-day competition break. If more than 180 days pass between the B and C vaccinations, the horse must go through the whole primary course (A plus B plus C) again.
Many people choose to vaccinate their horses twice a year to give better protection against the disease. If you plan to compete internationally, or in trotting or racing, a maximum of six months applies between vaccinations. Good luck!
